I got to the gym around 11:15 A.M. today, so it was a bit cooler than Sunday. Still not pleasant. LBS 175 lbs. – 3×5 – 5, 5, 5 Soreness went away pretty quickly, or at least didn’t impact my workout. The weight is easy, breathing in the heat is not. Focused on keeping my lower back extended by keeping my abs tight and not going quite as deep as I had been. (Videos from the last few times I squatted prior to my layoff had me going deeper than necessary.) Bench 145 lbs. – 3×5 – 5, 5, 5 Worked my way up to a weight I felt I […]

Alright, so I have been out of the gym since March 27th (don’t go off the fact that I didn’t post the last few workouts on here). I knew that I might be moving at any point, so I figured I’d take a break until I managed to get settled in. Only I haven’t moved and it’s been long enough that I have to get back. When I take a vacation from physical activity, I really take a vacation: the extent of my activity has been playing golf every couple of weeks or hitting balls at the practice range. When you work out at a badass gym, you have to […]

First, for anyone interested, I have rolled out a new nutrition-related site, PerformanceStack.com. If you go on there, you can view other people’s nutritional supplement stacks, create and share your own, and best of all: compare prices on different sites that carry your favorite supplements. It’s in beta form right now, and we’re working through some issues, but it should be halfway usable (or fully usable, but missing products and site links…both of which are mostly out of my control). You can check out the blog for more information. Please go on there, register, create your own performance stack, and rate/comment on products. Any help getting some activity going is […]

If, by chance, you have not heard of this clusterfuck yet, Google it and read some. I’m not going to rehash the details (except as necessary to illustrate my point), since they’ve been discussed everywhere else, and they’re not particularly relevant to the issue. I’m not going to state an opinion on whether there have been violations of his civil rights or not (and if you make it to the end of this post, it should be obvious why), but I am simply going to use some of the events surrounding this incident to illustrate a point. So, in fact, it’s worth noting that I have not done a significant amount […]

LBS 175 lbs. – 3×5 – 5, 5, 5 These are, if anything, getting easier. Definitely getting an appropriate bounce, and it is noticeably less when I don’t set my lower back properly (as would make sense). Started to shorten my rest between sets in a hope to get my conditioning back to acceptable quicker. It’s still coming back quite rapidly, though, as these were easier than the ones at 155 lbs. Press 95 lbs. – 3×5 – 5, 5, 5 Five pound jumps. Ugh. Tire Flips 220 lbs. tire (?) – 2 x 1.5 down and backs. The paint is rubbing off the tire, so I *think* it’s a […]

LBS 165 lbs. – 3×5 – 5, 5, 5 Nothing much to report here. Lifted on a squat rack that has fixed safety bars, which were right below proper depth for me, and managed to screw up half of the reps (not getting a proper bounce because I was afraid of hitting the bars). Bench Press 135 lbs. – 3×5 – 5, 5, 5 Decided to go ahead and alternate bench and press instead of pressing exclusively. Was playing with my grip on these, and definitely going to stick with a narrow grip. Feels much better on my shoulders. Also working on keeping my back tight, which in the time […]

LBS 155 lbs. – 3×5 – 5, 5, 5 Main goal while the weight is light is trying to develop some muscle memory. During deadlifts the previous workout, I realized I wasn’t doing a very good job setting my lower back, but I got a feel for it once I got that worked out. Goal for squats is to make sure I apply that, since I’m starting to think that I was missing some of the basics before. But again…my conditioning…wow. It’ll improve rapidly, but still. Press 90 lbs. – 3×5 – 5, 5, 5 Such a low weight. So painful to do (psychologically). Farmer’s Walks 95 lbs. x 2 […]

Oooooooooook I’m back. I was pretty regular about getting to the gym up until the middle of February, when I stopped completely to pound out the last two weeks of studying for the bar. But now that I’m done with that, I can start again. During that time, I ended up switching back to low bar squats, because my knees were giving me trouble. I did those for a day or two before I stopped going to the gym. Starting with them this time, but low. Also doing a massive reset on my press, which was continuing to give me problems. Today was mostly trying to get back into it […]

Someone recently pointed me to this blog, and it spurred my to go ahead and write this one, which I had been delaying writing until I had more time. For those of you interested mostly in startups/entrepreneurship, you may want to skip the first part, since it’s mostly me prancing around on my high horse. Raising Taxes As it stands, there’s this continuous debate over raising taxes and cutting spending. Being fairly conservative (of the Libertarian type), one would guess that I’d probably be against raising taxes. Sadly, this is not the case at all. Even though I think cutting spending is the number one thing that should be done, I […]

I have three or four blog posts in the works, but nothing will happen on them until the end of the month. They’re all fairly extensive, and between trying to study for the bar exam and some personal projects done, I don’t have the time. But, I’m going to go ahead and take the time to do this post, and probably one more while the information is still fresh in my mind. Background As I just mentioned, I’ve been working on some personal projects. Mainly one big project with some small variations on that one. Basically, it’s just a pretty straightforward web application. Up until a couple months ago, I […]
